New advancements in machine learning and testing have allowed researchers to reliably predict and eliminate potential sources of toxicity in the development of synthetically manufactured peptides. Until the late 1990s, many peptide drugs were manufactured recombinantly because it was prohibitively expensive to synthesize and purify in the lab.

New process innovations like in silico modeling of toxicity have allowed researchers to accurately predict and neutralize sources of toxicity.
